ImageLink Capability

Any chance we can the imagelink extension? It would allow us to do some neat stuff that we used to do with the skill tree page, and likely some other stuff. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ImageLink On a random note is it possible to change the background to something like the old AO beta map instead of the book? --Berael 23:03, 1 November 2008 (CDT)

i'll look into adding it. as for background. you mean.. the whole wiki background/theme? cause i've been trying to think up something more AO'ish to replace it with. --Shadowgod 19:18, 2 November 2008 (CST)
ok, ImageLink has been added. --Shadowgod 19:08, 8 November 2008 (CST)
Bwuahahahaha Thanks =) By the way, is it possible to restrict what certain people can upload as files?--Berael 22:41, 8 November 2008 (CST)

Item Icons for 2008 Halloween 10/28/08

Just FYI, i'm having problems ripping a current set of item icons. and so it may take a while before i can get an updated set to include the items with this year's halloween. past 4 versions of AOResourceTool error out/crash. so having to look into other options. --Shadowgod 18:16, 28 October 2008 (CDT)

Allright, new icons are now there. had to manually fix the terrifying plush icon, as it had a black-filled bg, instead of being transparent. --Shadowgod 21:15, 28 October 2008 (CDT)

File Upload Issue 7/26/08

The ability to upload files and photos seems broken, could the admin take a look at this issue? --Berael 16:38, 26 July 2008 (CDT)

fixed permissions. should be working now.--Shadowgod 01:54, 27 July 2008 (CDT)
Also experiencing Error creating thumbnail: /usr/bin/convert: not found when using the Image:Somwarper.jpg|right|300px line. --Berael 09:43, 27 July 2008 (CDT)
looks to be not installed on my server, i'll have to hunt it down and get it. --Shadowgod 23:03, 29 July 2008 (CDT)
should be installed and working now, so give it another go and see what else errors.. --Shadowgod 21:23, 30 July 2008 (CDT)
Still getting errors of the same type. The old thumbs are still good though. The project i've been working on is Steps of madness --Berael 22:27, 30 July 2008 (CDT)
Bah, ok, i over looked the full path of that file. installs to /usr/local and not /usr. fixed the config file, and hopefully got it now. --Shadowgod 13:25, 31 July 2008 (CDT)

AOICON is showing icon images with a green background instead of being transparent. Is it just my PC? Can this be changed back to being transparent? -- JungleGeorge 09:02, 31 August 2007 (PDT)

No, its something Vhab seems to have done to fix the absent Icon problem. I'm not entirely sure what he did or how to fix it to have a 'clear' background again. --Berael 09:48, 31 August 2007 (PDT)
I used the AODB resource tool v9.4.1 and extracted the ICONS from the AO Database. The PNG icons have the green background but the GIF have the transparent background. Maybe AOICON needs to use the GIF icons instead. --JungleGeorge 09:01, 3 September 2007 (PDT)

Portal Link
To fix the Portal link on the main page. Edit the file LocalSettings.php. Change this variable to the indicated value

$wgSitename = "Anarchy Online Wiki";

This will fix the portal link and some other links JungleGeorge 21:55, 27 May 2007 (PDT)

Fixed the links instead --Vhab 03:27, 29 May 2007 (PDT)

Template:AODB is "bugged" as in this wiki doesn't support "hotlinking", see Parser:$wgAllowExternalImages. If you don't want to enable it, we'd have to transfer the images directly into the wiki. -- Yllkoda 10:10, 23 May 2007 (PDT)

Fixed --Vhab 03:31, 24 May 2007 (PDT)
thanks :-) -- Yllkoda 05:36, 24 May 2007 (PDT)

Nifty Side Bars --Berael 20:45, 17 May 2007 (PDT)
Anybody know how to make the nifty side bars you find in wikipedia? Such as seen here where you have something on the right that has a lot of potential useful information. If anybody does, could they explain it to me?

Re: Nifty Side Bars --Vhab 22:10, 17 May 2007 (PDT)
I think they're done using templates, view the source on that page and you'll see a reference to Infobox, the infobox is located at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox. Likely we'll have to create (or copy) that template ourselfs and use it the same way it's being used on the bleach page.
--Berael 12:29, 18 May 2007 (PDT)
I've been playing around a little with the templates and stuff but the major problem i'm encountering is that there is a lot of stuff having to do with cascading style sheets. While I puttered around with that a little bit i'm not really sure what to do with that or about that, and in the end I don't know very much about it. Anybody have some information about how to make, upload, and use those things?
Addendum - Found help files, they are actualy pretty helpful.
Addendum - Hey Vhab, can we get the media wiki parser functions extension?
Re: Nifty Side Bars --Vhab 14:48, 18 May 2007 (PDT)
Which one is that? Got a link?
Re: Nifty Side Bars --Berael 15:52, 18 May 2007 (PDT)
[1] is the best I have
Re: Nifty Side Bars --Vhab 00:33, 19 May 2007 (PDT)
Installed it and while I was at it I also installed PageCSS, this means we can use < css > bla bla < / css > at the top of each page to inject css. This is much cleaner and better than abusing the html and style tag like we did before.
Yay! --Berael 06:52, 19 May 2007 (PDT)
I did some work on the alien armor page and it turned out pretty well after I tweaked the template a bit, but for some reason i'm getting some weird static in the page. There is a line right below the component table that shows up and i'm not sure where its from, also the bounding line from the right side of the table is now gone for some reason :/

Walkthrough Vs Guide --Berael 00:18, 26 April 2007 (CEST)
Is there a need to differentiate, or have different pages for a walkthrough of an area vs the information about the area?

I bet you are hinting at the subway page, for example. Personally I do see AO Wiki as a reference. This means I want some general info about areas/dungeons, the various mobs/bosses, their loot and so on. I don't want to know what's around the next corner to the left if I followed some selected 'walkthrough' path for example.
These things can be put into an article on it's own, if they are requested/required/wanted.
Btw, quests result by default in walkthroughs as reference information, for example. -- Yllkoda 12:08, 26 April 2007 (CEST)

Well, i'm also looking at the subway page in relation to my own walkthrough that I did for the ICC Shuttleport and the one i'm working on for the Nascense Training Grounds --Berael 15:09, 26 April 2007 (CEST)

Hmm, my categorizing was wrong, or at least partly. If you read one of your articles and then the old subway one you will see the differences. The worst part was, at least to me, the silently assumed context in all the explanations; furthermore it contained a lot of IMO superfluous information. In the end it's probably just a certain way of writing the things. -- Yllkoda 09:21, 1 May 2007 (CEST)

Mainpage redesign & Categories --Angels 19:20, 22 Jun 2005 (CEST)
If somebody of you add a new category, please edit the category page itself, so it it contains some introduction text. Otherwise the linking to that category will end in an empty "edit" page. You can always look at existing Categories HERE. In the next days i will redesign the layout on the mainpage (move stuff to second levels, etc). Comments of how to improve the Mainpage are welcome.

Removing Registration --Habitue 23:34, 20 Jun 2005 (CEST)
How about removing the need to register in order to edit content? I know the registration is in place to prevent vandalism, but I think a lot of people are sort of scared off by the need to register, even if it is free. In addition, there are a lot of people (myself included) that look at the recent changes regularly, and any vandalism would be noticed and corrected fairly quickly. I think one of the things that makes wikipedia so popular is the low barrier to entry. Sure there are going to be a few jerks, but I think there are far more people interested in making the wiki better. People who just delete things for the heck of it or just vandalize everything grow tired of that fairly quickly and move on.

RE: Removing Registration --Angels 01:24, 21 Jun 2005 (CEST)
I removed the need to register/login to edit. Have Fun :)

Layout? - Angels 11:01, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
How shall the main page be improved? Shall i add some nice graphics to the category headers? :) Just let me know what you like/dislike. Thanks alot

Symbols? --Baffle 11:45, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
Personally I like a clean and simple layout. Some images could ofcourse make the main page a little more fancy. What about some kind of logo or "banner" on the top? Making something for the category headers would be nice. What about adding some small symbols for each category? If you make images with text (the category title) it would make it quite unflexible when it comes to changing the structure if that is needed in the future... so I vote for some symbols.. and maybe some logo/banner on the top og the page. :-)
Layout? - Angels 12:39, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
Sounds nice. If i find time i will work on some icons.
Layout? - Landcast 15:05, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
I think we should reform the menu on the main page to be more organised. There is much off the content that can be put in subpages. Graphic banners isnt something that is needed before we are sure that the layout/headers stayes the way they are.
Item links and images - Baffle 15:25, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
Should we follow any standards when it comes to item links and image links? We have two sites to choose between when it comes to items. auno.org and aodb.info. Would it be possible to make some kind of link template for this? Just as an example : make every item link be passed to aoid.php with id=item id as parameter. aoid.php can then generate links to both auno and aodb and possible future item db's. And best of all, if any of the sites die out you can only change a few lines in the aoid.php file. It can also be easy for a user to choose what site they want to be auto redirected to. Im not sure how that would be for images. What do you think?
Styleguide & Comments - Angels 18:34, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
I will translate the Styleguide asap (maybe tomorrrow) so that you have an overview what extensions the wiki has. I also would love if everbody who uses the comment function to post his comment on the TOP of the comment page... so its easier to read i guess.
auno - Landcast 17:44, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
I think there also is one for auno links. doh not sure about that either.. We need to start to make they style guide :O
Image links - Baffle 16:25, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
I see now that {{AODB|number}} is the correct way to link images. :-)
Yes - Landcast 15:49, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST)
I think that angles has made something like this for the german wiki but hasnt had time to do it for the english one yet.

Reorganization[edit]

I'd like to see a reorganization of the zones, cities, playfields, and dungeons. In my opinion, in their present form they are very difficult to browse or even discover. Some of the categories are redundant. For example, the Special:Uncategorizedpages has a number of locations that should be located somewhere but can't because of the current organization.

You might be wondering, "Why the hell don't YOU do it!?" which is a valid question, but I lack the wiki knowhow that I think it would require.

I would suggest the main category of Zones, which would correspond with the zones on the actual map. Inside of each of those zones there are cities, dungeons, locations, npcs, mobs, and now that I think about it various other things.

Zones

-Cities

-Dungeons

-Locations

-Npcs

-etc

-etc

-etc

In the same category as zones we can provide pages for cities, dungeons, hunting grounds, and the like but those would just be links to the actual page that should reside under the zone in which it's located.

I'm just throwing out ideas, so I'd really like to hear opinions on this.

Thanks

-CG

Its not a horrible Idea, but you have to understand that some categories are specially oriented while others have other categorical features. So we could do a category of: Zones and make Cities, Locations, and Dungeons a sub category, but people wouldn't fit because people can also fit under factions, as could cities in some cases. In Terms of browsing we could reorganize the main page around that idea. --Berael 21:31, 7 September 2007 (PDT)
I think we can address that by eliminating the "sightseeing" category and replacing it with "Browse by Zone" or "Browse by Category."
Categories can be cities, dungeons, hunting grounds, bars, Special Shops, People, etc, etc. Those categories will essentially just be lists of the information already gathered under each zone where it belongs. --Berael 07:33, 3 September 2007 (PDT)
I've started to do some of this categorization in the playfields category. Good, bad, indifferent? -CG
Now that you have brought it up I'm starting to think about totally re-organizing the main page. The problem is that it is a port that was done of the german AOwiki page (which you should try and crosslink to when ever possible using 'de:pagename' as the wikilink). So I'm considering slimming down the projects into major categories such as:
  • Beginner Information - Introductory guides that give immediate information about playing the game.
  • Character Development - Has profession, breed, perks, research, and other guides having to do specifically with characters.
  • Game System - Includes guides that deal with the game systems, like interface guides, combat guides, AAD/AAO, Deltas, etc.
  • Community - Has sections for slang, terminology, guides for starting and running organizations or general game etiquete.
  • Tradeskills - Has a directory of all the tradeskills in the game
  • Geography - Different ways to organize write ups of various locations in the world.
  • Tools - Third party programs and the like.
Just musing on this now and waiting for my thoughts to gel on it. --Berael 21:31, 7 September 2007 (PDT)
