I know the registration is in place to prevent vandalism, but I think a lot of people are sort of scared off by the need to register, even if it is free. In addition, there are a lot of people (myself included) that look at the recent changes regularly, and any vandalism would be noticed and corrected fairly quickly. I think one of the things that makes wikipedia so popular is the low barrier to entry. Sure there are going to be a few jerks, but I think there are far more people interested in making the wiki better. People who just delete things for the heck of it or just vandalize everything grow tired of that fairly quickly and move on.
