There are many different Tradeskills that characters can try on the Arete Landing or ICC Shuttleport island. Most of the equipment that is received from the missions given by the NPCs can be made with parts from around the startup area and items that can be bought from Antonio Stacklund.
There are two main kinds of tradeskills on the startup area: Weapon Upgrades, and Equipment/Armor Creation. All upgraded weapons are NODROP and therefore have to be upgraded by the character that would be using them, whereas tradeskilled equipment and armor can be traded between characters.
Prudent Engineers, especially possible future crafting engineers, may choose to buy at least one 'virgin', unupgraded Solar-Powered Pistol; it is the starting component for the Solar-Powered Tinker Pistol, which upgrades through its various incarnations right up to level 200.
ICC Shuttleport's Adri Afeli's offer to upgrade weapons stands eternally; the quest can be repeated to get the dual weapons that many players need, and bypassing the need to buy the Antonio's Adaptation Factory for Weapons Upgrades, although Equipment Creation still requires it. Whether doing the quest in the second time, or when the quest becomes bugged, as it easily can, Afeli will not offer the quest in dialogue, but trading him the items gives the same reward, minus the backpack.
