Chirops, Saurian-like creatures found everywhere on Rubi-Ka

Mob is said to have come from the word 'Mobile', to distinguish enemy NPCs, who could move when attacked, from friendly NPCs, who stood around all day. However true this may remain as a tendency, it is no longer true as an absolute. This is particularly true in Anarchy Online, where NPCs not only roam or patrol, as in other games, but can be attacked and killed and will not only defend themselves as well as any other mob, but give chase.

At any rate, the name stuck, and mob is the standard word for NPC enemies in Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games (MMORPGs) including Anarchy Online.
